Be prepared on moving day

Moving can be one of life’s most challenging experiences, regardless of age, due to the sheer logistical and emotional tolls involved. The displacement of belongings often creates immediate clutter and stress. The secret to a smooth move is planning ahead and being prepared. To set yourself up for success, avoid the temptation to believe the move “should be easy,” as this leads to procrastination. Instead, acknowledge the necessary effort and budget enough time, recognizing that everything will likely take twice as long as you think it will.

A strategic approach to packing is foundational to minimizing moving stress. Start by packing items you don’t use often as soon as you have an official moving date. Use the move as a crucial opportunity to seriously declutter, because moving unwanted items wastes both money and effort. If you begin sorting weeks ahead, you may even be able to sell furniture, electronics, or collectibles to help offset moving costs. When it comes to the containers themselves, utilize existing luggage, bins, and baskets since you have to move them anyway. Finally, set aside one or two bins containing all the items you will need immediately upon arrival, such as clothing, towels, toiletries, bedding, and coffee supplies.

Efficient coordination and careful documentation will ensure your belongings reach their destination safely. If moving with a group, assign specific responsibilities to minimize bickering and prevent tasks from being overlooked. Document your items thoroughly by taking photos of all major pieces of furniture to record their condition accurately. For easier stacking and loading, use standardized box sizes (one or two sizes at most). Label the sides of each box (skipping the top) so you can tell where they belong regardless of stacking. Remember that heavy items should be placed in small boxes, which ideally should not exceed 25 pounds, to prevent the boxes from bursting or being too difficult to carry.

When hiring professionals, you must understand the rules and services provided. It is wise to have everything packed and ready to go the night before the movers arrive. Be aware of items movers legally cannot transport, such as hazardous materials (explosives, flammables, corrosives). Furthermore, lithium batteries and items containing them are generally not moved or stored. For local moves in California, movers are required by law to charge double drive time, which accounts for the time it takes the truck to drive from your old home to your new home times two. Due to potential liabilities, you should plan to move all high-value items yourself, including cash, jewelry, sentimental keepsakes, and important documents.

Special preparation is required for moving day dependents, including children, pets, and plants. Moving can be highly stressful for pets and children, so it is recommended to arrange moving-day babysitters for both kids and pets to prevent disruption. For houseplants, they require support as they “feel” the emotional effects of transition. To prepare plants, give them a good soak in the sink a few days before packing so the soil is still partially damp on moving day. Protect long, leafy foliage by gently wrapping it in newspaper, which protects it while allowing it to breathe. Secure the plants in a tall box with gaps stuffed with more newspaper to keep them upright and create a safe, humid environment.

On moving day itself, minimize disruption and maximize efficiency. If you are moving to or from a busy urban area, arrange for any required parking permits to ensure the moving truck can park close to your door. Clearly define and separate anything you do not want the movers to take to avoid costly mistakes. Provide refreshing drinks and portable snacks for the moving crew, but save carb-heavy food like pizza and beer until the move is complete, as they can induce lethargy. Finally, once you arrive at your new destination, streamline the first night by setting up beds, putting up shower curtains, and arranging coffee-making supplies immediately.
